Jökullaup
Jökullaup – icelandic word
standing for a glacial flood.
Five
weeks after the eruption of the volcano under the glacier Vatnajökull, from Sunday,
September 29th, 1996 at
10:48 a.m. and three week after the volcanic activities had stopped,
Iceland got its most important glacial flood of the century.
The enormous temperatures occasioned by the eruption had melted some 2
square kilometers of the glaciers ice. The water had gathered in the sub glacial
depression of Grimsvötn and now, suddenly, in spite of predictions that this
would not occur until warmer spring temperature would arrive, the glacier broke
on there different locations.
Within a few hours the flood increased to 45000 m³ (one
third of Amazon river at its mouth), under normal conditions the river from the
glacier flows at some 77 m³ at this period of the year. Icebergs weighting more
than 1000 tons, measuring 10 à 15 meters in height, were driven over the sands
of Skeidarár.
It
was a disaster for the uninhabited plaine of Skeidarársandur. Power lines as well as the main road from Reykjavík to
the south East were washed away. The steel construction of Icelands
