At the beginning of October, the ascent from the Julier is often covered in snow, and the descent from the Fuorcla d’Agnel could be icy. An alternative is the hike from Spinas to the Jenatsch hut. Arrival by RhB railway – the forest road to Spinas may not be used without special authorisation.
Right next to the railway station on the south side of the Albula tunnel is the Spinas Hotel with 12 rooms, a good restaurant and a terrace for refreshment before the ascent or to quench your thirst after the descent.
The route continues along the Bever river through a larch forest, some of which are already dressed in their orange autumn colours.
Piz Bever
You can’t see the Jenatschhut yet, but it can’t be far away: The flag is already flying in front of the hut
Arrived! A view back down into the valley to Piz Bever and Piz Suvretta to the left.
Early in the morning, before breakfast, the sun shines on the nameless summit. The glacier tongue of Piz Calderas emerges in front of it . At the end of the 19th century it was still rolling almost as far as the Jenatschhütte.
One of three young marmots looks curiously at the hikers. Th marmots are still quite slender at the end of the first week of October… The older ones, well-fed are probably all in hibernation.
